Pheonix In Progress

I have started a new art project that I am working on in spurts. Often I lay out my art supplies and move between this project and my computer when I’m writing. Gluing bits of paper to canvas board helps me work out plot points or bits of dialogue. I often do my easiest writing when I’m nowhere near my computer.
Here’s a bit of what I do, how I do it, and where it’s at so far:

I started by prepping the canvas board with a dull, streaked background. I knew the phoenix would be colorful and I wanted it to stand out.

This is just streaks of acrylic paint. Nearly everything I try to paint comes out just this muddy. That is why I switched to tissue paper; I can layer color over color, but the colors don’t run together.

I used some photos from the internet as reference, but I drew the phoenix out on the board free-hand.

My supplies: Clear glue, scissors, craft sticks (I sometimes use wooden toothpicks) and bits of tissue paper.

Then I just started filling in. I always overlay several different colors and strips to give more depth. Once the tissue is wet with glue, it is easy to manipulate with the craft sticks and get the piece just where I want it.

The top-half is mostly done here. I will probably go back and add some outline detail to the wings later.

I still have hours of work yet to go on this piece, but it is coming together nicely. This something I'm doing myself. I'm keeping this one!

This is a close up of its head with the eyes drawn in with a Sharpie. You can get an idea of what the texture of the work is like.

This is my phoenix, who may or may not moonlight as a showgirl in Vegas.  🙂
